Shop Addition

November 2006 - February 2007

One of the things that attracted us to the place in Thomasville, GA was the shop building (below) that was already on the property. It meant I finally had a dedicated place to put all of my tools without taking up any space in the garage -- a real plus with my wife! The building measures 16' wide by 24' deep and has an 8' ceiling in the lower area. The upper storage area has about a 7' clearance at the point where the roof breaks and is now used for everything from project parts to Christmas decorations.

The building had never been wired, so the first step in updating it was running electrical service. We set a 30-position sub-panel to allow ample space for circuit isolation. I set eight, two-bulb T-8 fluorescent fixtures divided in two rows for general lighting of the existing building.

After the move itself was settled (more or less), it was time to create more shop space with an addition!

This is a conceptual drawing of the existing/new areas. I didn't bother with elevation detail since I'm the one doing most of the work. I'm using a 4/12 pitch on the new section to minimize the mass to some extent. I decided to make the right end of the new roof a hip to blend better with the line of the existing roof.

Here's a shot of the bare ground next to the existing building. We had to have three pine trees removed to make room for the addition. While the tree crew was here, we had a total of 17 pines removed due to disease or to provide more space for other trees.
