This is an adaptation
of a berth I built for the master stateroom in a yacht -- the yacht version
did not have the headboard shown here. This version of the bed is built for
a king-size mattress with a bit of space on the sides and foot to allow the
bed cover to be tucked. Primary woods used in this item are cherry and walnut.
Finish is three coats of hand-rubbed danish oil top-coated with four coats of
polyurethane varnish. |

This is a close-up
of the headboard. Posts and gently-arced top rail are solid cherry which is
capped with walnut. The field of the headboard is ash burl veneer framed in
solid cherry. The burl veneer was stained to blend the colors of the cherry
and walnut. The face side of the posts are fluted. |

Here is a closer
look at the base of the bed showing the fluted corner radius. Again, the primary
wood is cherry with walnut used as an accent. The base has five drawers on full-extension
slides for easy access to stored items. There are also two small stroage areas,
one on each side at the foot, that are suitable for items such as magazines.
The toe kick is rendered in walnut and is recessed to give the piece a lighter
appearance. |
